Pella Renovation and Replacement Project in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, MD - The Community School is an academic & mentoring program, based in the Remington community, for young people who want to advance their education, improve their lives, and better their community.

In May 2007, Tom Culotta, founder and Teacher of The Community School embarked on a large renovation project.  The goal was to provide students with a safe, supportive and comfortable learning environment.  Many local organizations and volunteers joined the cause, including K.C. Company, the local Pella Window & Door distributor.

Window replacement was the first phase of the renovation project.  The Community School replaced windows years ago with a vinyl product but was experiencing water leakage, warping, and other performance issues.

K.C. Company installed Architect Series Replacement Double Hung windows in the main building.  Pella wood replacement windows are energy efficient, keeping the interior warm in the winter and cool in the summer.  These products include low-maintenance exteriors, and Pella's cam-action locks are designed to increase leverage as the window is closed to ensure a superior, weather-tight seal.  The real beauty of the Pella window is the creative freedom to choose from virtually endless design options including unique shapes and sizes, unlimited exterior colors, standard and custom grille patterns and our new collection of woods – Mahogany, Alder, Douglas Fir and Pine.

“The installation went off without a hitch.  The students, volunteers and staff at the Community School are very happy with the outcome”, said Tom Culotta.

A few months later when Tom decided to move forward with a second project, the renovation of a Conference Room Building to expand classroom space, he, once again contacted K.C. Company for replacement windows.  Working with Tom and Ed Gavin of CSC Construction, K.C. Company was able to come up with an economical solution for the project, using Pella ProLine Double Hung windows to replace the old vinyl windows.  Ed Gavin and CSC Construction installed the new windows and the facility opened for classes on schedule.

CSC Construction also poured new floors, and built new walls in the adjacent building which originally served as a garage.

Ed Gavin, owner of CSC Construction, was a student at The Community School and is a long time Pella customer.  Ed has remained active as a volunteer and supporter of the school’s endeavors for over 25 years.

The Community School is now starting phase three of the renovation which consists of rebuilding the storefront and increasing the handicap accessible areas.

“During the course of the project, I was able to attend a class at the school and meet some of the students.  It was a rewarding experience, being able to do something positive for the community in the course of our normal business activities” said Matthew Welch, an Sales Representative of K.C. Company Remodeling Division.

The Community School was founded in 1982 and is governed by a community Board of Trustees with the active support and involvement of a Board of Advisors, Sponsors, students, parents, alumni, and supporters from both the community and beyond.

K.C. Company operates 9 Pella® Window & Door Showrooms through Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC. And is a leading branch within the Pella Direct Sales Network (PDSN).  For more information on K.C. Company or Pella products, call 301-957-7000 or visit kcpella.staging.r2integrated.com.
