Locking, Operation and Security FAQ

How do I open, close, and lock my casement and awning windows?

To open the windows, just lift up the lock handle then rotate the crank. Be sure to lift the lock handle first — otherwise you'll risk damage to the operating mechanism. It is important to keep the setscrew tight to avoid wear on the crank and roto-operators. Clean the tracks occasionally with a brush.
Please call our Sales or Parts Departments for hardware options including brass and white finishes, folding cranks, and knob operators.

How do I open, close, and lock my double hung windows?

To open the window, turn the lock(s) located on the top of the lower sash. Always use the lift handles to raise the lower sash, not the muntins (pane divider grills) to operate the sash. Keep the vinyl liners on the sides of the window frame clean and lubricated with a thin coat of paraffin (available at hardware and craft stores) to keep them working smoothly. The unpainted sides of the sash should never be painted, or operation will be difficult. The wood has been treated at the factory, and is not exposed to weather.

How do I tilt my double-hung windows for cleaning?

  1. If you have Designer®, Architect Series®, or Precision Fit® Series:

    A) Remove the screen. Raise the bottom sash a few inches, and rotate it by pushing out at the bottom and pulling in at the top of the sash.

    B) Lower the top sash a few inches, and rotate the same way as the lower sash.

CAUTION: Do not use the sash to support your body weight because they do pivot under pressure. Be sure to return the sash securely to their upright position, nesting inside the jamb liners, to insure smooth operation and locking.

  2. If you have ProLine® Tilt Units purchased after May 1997:

    A) Raise the bottom sash a few inches. Tilt the lower sash by pressing on the jamb liner and pulling on the upper corner of the sash. Repeat on the other side.

    B) Carefully lower the bottom sash until it rests on the trim. Pull the upper sash down until you can comfortably and safely on the top of the sash. Repeat step 1; the top sash may be slightly harder to open than the lower sash. Be sure to return the sash securely to their upright position, nesting inside the jamb liners, to insure a smooth operation and locking.

How do I lock my sliding glass door?

The thumb turn is located behind the interior handle. To lock the door, turn the thumb turn to the VERTICAL position before closing the door, and then slide the door closed. You will hear the lock engage. Some Pella doors are furnished with a foot bolt. This piece has two locking positions; one allows the door to be latched when it's 3" open, the other provides extra security when the door is fully closed. Move the switch to the side to engage; move the switch towards the center to disengage.

My slider doesn't move as easily as it used to. What can I do?

  1. Keep the floor track free of debris, and apply a thin layer of paraffin wax or dry lubricant such as silicone spray. Do not use oily lubricants as they attract dust and grim which will eventually restrict the door's movement.
  2. Adjust the bottom rollers. The adjustment holes are located on either side of the movable door, near the bottom. Remove the plastic cap and use a long-shaft 8" #2 Phillips screwdriver to adjust the rollers up or down, clockwise to raise the end of the door and counter-clockwise to lower it. Replace the plastic cap.

Now the latch won't catch!

The lock strikes are adjustable. Simply pop off the plastic cover, loosen the five screws on each strike, and move them to the position where they fit exactly into the rectangular holes on the edge of the panel. Retighten the screws and snap the cover back on.

How can I adjust the sliding screen door?

  1. Keep the floor track free of debris and apply a thin layer of paraffin was or dry lubricant. Do not use oily lubricants as they attract dust and grime, which will eventually restrict the door's movement.
  2. The screen rollers can be adjusted by turning the screws located on the top of the door. If the screen door is tight on the bottom, turn the adjusting screws clockwise to raise the door. If the screen door is too tight at the top, turn the adjusting screws counter-clockwise to lower the door. Level the screen so the edge aligns with the lock jamb of the doorframe.

The screen cloth on the Rolscreen came out of the tracks on the slide. How do I get it back in?

Push the screen cloth out to the exterior, raise the operator bar to the top of the window, and lower the screen. The cloth will automatically retract back into the guide.

WARNING: Pella Window and door screens are intended to act as a barrier against insects, and are not designed to restrain people or pets.
