Pella Designer Series Windows

The Kinsleys had been living in the same row house for over 30 years in a friendly Washington DC neighborhood that they didn’t want to leave. They felt that a renovation was the best alternative.

The home is a typical row home in Washington DC, only 14’ wide. There was a need to keep the space open while bringing natural light into the center of the home. Since we, 3DG – District Design Development Group, are both the builder and the designer, we did not run into the typical obstacles that sometimes crop up between these 2 entities.

The obstacles were mainly that the site was very small. The homeowners wanted more space, but building an addition was not an option since the neighborhood is historic. Since the width was so tight, it was a challenge to fit the stairs into the space and the existing walls were far from plumb. By turning the stairs 90 degrees, it added much needed useable space where there was once a corridor. Once the existing windows were removed, the 100 year old mortar deteriorated into sand. Much of this had to be replaced in order to install the new windows. From this project, we learned that the design process is critical and taking time in the beginning of a project such as this pays off. Each decision was important to the overall outcome.

K.C. Company – Pella Windows & Doors brought samples of the windows to the house and provided details of the jamb and sash to the homeowners. The homeowners were very focused on having the maximum amount of glass in each double hung window.

In the end, the homeowners love the finished project. The turn of the stairs 90 degrees is rather unconventional for these homes and the result is dramatic. By adding windows and a skylight at the stairway it’s completely light-filled.

The difference of this row home from its neighbors can be seen from the sidewalk. The beauty of Pella Architect Series windows gave this home some much needed curb appeal.

Now is a great time of year to get a fresh start on cleaning and that includes the windows. Have you ever attempted to clean your windows and what resulted was nothing more than smudging the dirt around.
