Canstruction is a really cool event put on by the Northern Viriginia AIA. This was the first year that K.C. Company was involved and it was well worth it. I attended the planning meeting, as well as the “build out” night on Friday, April 4th. It all takes place at Ballston Mall in Arlington, and its quite a production.
14 teams of local architects spend weeks buying and planning how they can turn regular canned foods into works of art! The build out night was really amazing, because truck after truck unloaded hundreds of perfectly selected cans. The teams worked until about midnight building, arranging, and perfecting their structures. Size, color, and label design all play a role into the overall appearance and character of their final structure.
There was a large hippo, a frog, and even a toaster. The designs and themes were really creative and fun. The structures were displayed at the mall from April 5-12 and judged by local architects and designers.
Canstruction was able to donate thousands of cans of food to the Arlington Food Assistance Center and help over 700 local families in need.
