It was rather disturbing to wake up to the news of yet another increase in gas prices…now up to almost $4 a gallon! Thankfully our company participates in telecommuting.
The more I hear about the increasing cost of gasoline – the more I look for ways to reduce my energy usage. Whether it’s car-pooling with friends and family or changing my conventional light bulbs to compact fluorescent light (CLF) – my efforts will add up to something.
Montgomery County has a large population of recyclers. I, too, am one of those weekly committed citizens that drag my blue can around to the front of my house. All my neighbors seem to join me in this weekly ritual. Imagine the intro to Showtime’s “Weeds” except we all drive away in hybrids instead of SUV’s. Same time – same place…
As time progresses, I’m finding more ways to reduce my household footprint. Changing to a programmable thermostat in our home has helped as well – reports state that should add up to a savings of $150 a year in heating and cooling costs.
Recently, we were notified that Pella won the 2008 ENERGYSTAR Partner of the Year award – this is the second year in a row they have won. I’m happy to work with a company of citizens who understand our responsibility to the environment. Replacement windows can reduce your energy usage up to 28%. That’s pretty big - when you feel can the breeze coming into your home through a drafty window. I’m afraid to see what’s going out if I can feel what’s coming in!
At the end of the day – I’m not looking at my activities as a savings in my bank account but more as it being just the right thing to do.
How are you reducing your personal footprint? How does your home compare in energy conservation? Take a measurement with the ENERGYSTAR Home Energy Yardstick…
