Everything you value needs to be maintained in some way, shape, or form.
Your car must be washed to keep the finish in pristine condition and free from rust. The oil must be changed to keep the engine running efficiently. Your computer must be scanned routinely to make sure it is free from viruses to keep it operating optimally. You must maintain your health to stay at peak performance.
Do homeowners feel the same about the exterior of their homes? Over the years, I have observed that people do not tend to put the same type of effort in maintaining the exterior of their home as they do their other possessions.
A casual yearly inspection of the exterior of the home can identify a lot of potential issues and save you thousands of dollars of repair work and aggravation down the road…
- Walk around the exterior of your home and do a visual inspection of the caulk joints around all of your windows, doors, & siding and flashing. If there is a void or if the caulk has fallen out or is non-existent, you need to take action quickly. Water and insects could be entering your home and causing damage that you will not discover for years…and could cost big bucks to repair.
- Open, close and operate all of your windows/doors and their accessories annually. Make sure all of the mechanisms are functioning properly and are free of dirt and debris. If debris is present, it can be easily vacuumed out or brushed away with an old soft paint brush.
- Inspect the weather-stripping on all of the windows and doors. If it is crimped, torn or has fallen out you could be losing a lot of money in energy costs. It could also be allowing water and/or insects to enter your home. Replacement or repair must be done quickly…
- Have the exterior of your home cleaned annually. This is an inexpensive way to keep your home looking great and will extend the life of the exterior finishes.
- Make sure the exterior paint is not peeling. If it is, take appropriate action as soon as possible. This could be exposing the underlying surface to moisture damage.
- Make sure all loose siding and shutters are securely fastened. They could come loose during a light or moderate wind and cause severe damage to your home.
It takes just a little effort to do this inspection. And…you can do it while drinking your favorite beverage! It is not hard, takes just a short amount of time and could save you thousands of dollars.
